This is my most popular introductory webinar and will provide you with a basic understanding of some of the most common physicochemical terms used in the prediction of likely exposure routes and hazardous effects; not only for human health but also for environmental fate and effects. What’s more, expanding your knowledge of chemistry will help you with the identification of structural alerts, the use of appropriate read across and mechanisms of action.

Topics to be covered during the Chemistry for the Non-Chemist webinar include:

    • Categories of chemicals; organic, inorganic, polymers, UVCB and nanomaterials
    • Chemical nomenclature (how chemicals are named);
    • Chemical properties influence of toxicity;
    • Using chemical structural alerts in predicting potential effects;
    • Using physicochemical properties to predict exposure routes;
    • Common chemical reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis and electrophilic reactions); and their relevance to human health and environmental effects;
    • Types of chemical bonding; and,
    • Intermolecular forces.

Who should attend?

    • Technical/scientific staff who work in a regulatory department
    • Authors of safety data sheets (SDS) and/or extended safety data sheets (eSDS)
    • Staff involved in classification and labelling under EU CLP/ GHS
    • Occupational hygienists
    • HSE staff
    • Dangerous Goods safety advisors
    • Occupational health advisors
    • Chemical risk assessment professionals

About the webinar

A unique feature of this training webinar is that you are encouraged to ‘raise your hand’ and put questions forward throughout the training – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Training resources included:

    • Training handbook complementing the webinar and including practice questions and answers to test your understanding of toxicology basics.
    • Copy of all slides used during the training
    • Copy of the live recording
    • Attendance on the two- hour live training course
    • A free 15 -minute follow up session
    • Certificate of attendance (if required)
